The humid tropical Farankaraina forest is located 15 kilometres east of Maroantsetra. The forest is composed   In 1999, the NGO [[''Antongil Conservation'' is a NGO ]] was set up by South Lake Wild Animal Park, The Wildlife Protection Foundation (UK) and Zoo de Doué (France)with the goal to conserve the tropical forest of Farankaraina. In 2008 a forest station was opened and park wardens began patrolling the area. The same year an ecotourism camp was opened and three shelter tents were made available to visitors. In 2009 inventories began documenting the flora and fauna of the park. The program includes a rehabilitation centre where rescued lemurs, chameleons and birds are taken care of and released back to the forest. The entrance fee to the park is 5.000 Ariary (about 2 euros) per person.
