Ambatomanga literally means "the blue rock". During the times of the Merina Kingdom, the location was residence for relatives of [[Andrianampoinimerina - King of Merina Kingdom|King Andrianampoinimerina]].
The area of Ambatomanga offers great hiking opportunities. Hikers will walk along small rivers, pass green rice fields and small villages where visitors can watch raffia weavers and smiths blacksmiths at their work.
