Maintirano is a port town on the west coast of Madagascar. which servers as the capital of the Melaky region. The popularionpopulation

was approximately 16,000 in 2001. Most people in Maintirano are of [[Sakalava]] descent. About 55% of the population live from fishing and about 34% from farming. Acriculture include bananas, maize, sweet potatoes and rice.
