Pepper grows mainly on the east coast. There are large fields between Farafangana and Nosy Varika. Pepper is planted in the dry season from May until November and produces crops after three years with a peak production in about five years.
Pepper plants have a lifetime between 10-25 years.
Pepper vines can reach up to 10 metres. Black pepper is harvested while green, before ripening and sun-drying.
Unique to Madagascar is the Voatsiperifery Wild Pepper.
