The Mikea people live in the dry forests and arid steppes northeast of Toilara (Tulear) in the region of the Ihotry lake in the southwest of Madagascar. They are a small nomadic population, who feeds mainly on roots (babou). Until today, the Mikea people have preserved their own lifestyle without any constraints.

Théo Rakotovao is a well known Malagasy singer who named his group MIKEA after the people he sings about. In his songs he tells stories of his childhood and the life of the Mikea people.
