Tour description

Day 1: Tana - Maroantsetra - Makira Natural Park (L/D)

Flight from Tana to Maroantsetra, located on the Masoala Peninsula on the northeast coast of Madagascar. Someone will welcome and assist you. Transfer to the harbour where we will take a local boat on Antenambalana River, drive about 4h to landing stage Andaparaty.

Picnic lunch on the riverside. This will be a long and strenuous day of hiking (2h), with over 700m of elevation along this bulky mountain with its large caldera. Only the strong people can do this trip and it is necessary to spend the night camping on the mountain!
The rainforest trails don’t generally have deep mud but can be slippery on the surface after recent rain. Some trails are broad and flat while others are narrow and uneven, with rocks and roots underfoot. Walking sticks are strongly recommended. The terrain in the campsites is completely flat, but often wet, which can be not warm even throughout the summer season. You can expect to walk 6.5km per day on average. Dinner and other night in the camp.

Day 2: Makira Natural Park (B/L/D)

We will spend the cool hours of the morning to discover the rainforest of this wonderful national park. Targets will include Silky sifaka, Ring-tailed mongoose, Grey bamboo lemur. We may spot birds including Red-breasted coua, Velvet_asity and Broad-billed roller. Picnic lunch in the forest, and in the afternoon back to the camp. Night walk in the surroundings of the camp. We might see lemurs including Wolly lemur, Eastern sportive lemur and Greater dwarf lemur.

Dinner and night in the camp.

Day 3: Makira Natural Park (B/L/D)

Today we venture away from the camp and into the mysterious park and only recently discovered last natural treasure of Madagascar. The park’s wildlife is very rich encompassing lemurs, birds, frogs, chameleons but the true highlights are indisputably the Red ruffed lemur and the Helmet vanga. The park has also other unique birds (Bernier's vanga, Short-legged ground-roller and Scaly ground-roller) and the Parson's chameleon, but they are very elusive. Back to the camp. Afternoon free: relax or swimming in a natural pool. Night walk in another part of the forest around the camp. Overnight at the camp.

Day 4: Makira - Maroantsetra (B/L/D)

Breakfast. In the early morning, we start the long hike off the mountain, though this time with gravity on our side! Along the way, we’ll have chances to continue savouring the wildlife and plants. We continue to the boat harbour, then boat transfer back to Ankompy landing stage and thereafter transfer to the hotel. Lunch in the hotel. Afternoon, a short walk in the town for exploring the incredible colourful Tomato Frog, which is endemic to this area. Dinner and other night in the hotel.

Day 5: Maroantsetra - Tana (B)

Breakfast and transfer from the hotel to airport and fly to Tana. End of our service.
