Ambohitsorohitra Palace

The Presidential Palace, also known as Ambohitsorohitra Palace, is located in the centre of Madagascar's capital Antananarivo. The President of Madagascar has his office in the palace. The palace is guarded by soldiers and it is not allowed for the public to enter the grounds.

From 1890 to 1892 the rococo-style building was constructed according to the plans of the architect Jully. After completion it became the residence of the French General Bompard. In 1960, the French Embassy moved into the palace. From 1976 to 1989 President Didier Ratsiraka lived in the palace before moving to Iavoloha. From thereon the palace was used as the City Hall with the mayor's office. After the Mayor Marc Ravalomanana was elected President, he preferred this location and turned his prior working place into the presidential office.

Since March 2009, the palace is the office of President Andry Rajoelina.
