Ambanja is the capital town of the disctrict by the same name in northern Madagascar. The town is located along the beautiful Sambirano river.

The population is approximately 30,000. About 60 percent live from farming and the most important crop is crop is cocoa. Other important crops include vanilla, rice and coffee. Industry provide employment for about 26 percent and the services sector for about 2 percent. Approximately 10 percent of the population make a living from fishing.

Ambanja is enroute Nosy Be approximately 20km from Ankify harbour, where boats to Nosy Be and Nosy Komba departs. There is a domestic airport which is currently not served by Air Madagascar (March 2010).
