From 1890 to 1892 the rococo-style building was constructed after the plans of the architect Jully. After completion it became the residence of the French General Bompard. In 1960, the French Embassy moved into the palace. From 1976 to 1989 president [[Ratsiraka ]] was living in the palace, before moving to [[Iavoloha]]. From there on the palace was used as the City Hall with the mayor's office. After the mayor [[Mark Ravalomanana ]] was elected president he refused to leave and turned his prior working place into the presidential office. <br><br>
