Trekking Maroantsetra to Antalaha via Cap Masoala : 16 Days and 15 Nights


We offer to exploring by small hiking to give adventurers the flexibility and ease to travel some of the most fascinating and remote destinations on Earth. Not only we enjoy to hike in the rainforest and sea cost along Antongil Bay to the Masoala peninsula and continous along on the cost of Indiana Ocean and picnic lunch, camping on the beach; outdoor; in jungle but also we discover incredible Aye-Aye in the Tropical reserve Farankarainana and Masoala National Park to observe the endemic red ruffed lemur, Brown mousse lemur, white fronted brown lemur Brown mousse lemur, white fronted brown lemur amazing birds like a helmet vanga, Blue vanga, Rufous vanga, Chaber’s vanga colorfully Leaf tailed gecko, and, leaf chameleon and the end of the hike we can visit detached reserve Ambodirafiato observe the endanger plant to call “Pitcher plant (nepenthes masoalensis)” which is also endemic in that area.


Day 1: Tana – Maroantsetra – Farankarainana (L/D)


Fly from Tana to airport in Maroantsetra where guide will meet and assist you. Then transfer to the harbor to take a local boat and drive 1h30mnto landing stage Andranofotsy. walk trip lasts about 1h 30mn can be reach Farankarainana. Ring tailed-mongoose welcome us then installation on the camping, lunch on the camp. Afternoon swimming, relax on the beach or exploration surrounding the camp and evening we’ll see the Easterngrey bamboo lemur, Madagascar tree boa, lowland streaked tenrec surrounding the camp and birds including the Madagascar Pygmy kingfisher, created ibis, blue coua,..

After dinner, night walk to search Aye-Aye the rarest lemur but we often see in this region. Other night in the camp Farankarainana.


Day 2: Farankarainana – Ambolôsy (B/L/D)


Today, we venture away from the hill forest and into the coast we enjoy the exceptional marvelous view on the Indian Ocean and the North Eastern of the Island. Picnic lunch on the beach and keep going on the way. Dinner and night Ambolôsy.

Day 3: Ambolôsy – Ambanizana (B/L/D)Breakfast and depart, this is the hardest way steep slopes, rocky, mud, and river crossings will make for a truly adventurous day. Picnic lunch on the beach. Dinner and night Ambanizana.


Day 4: Ambanizana – Masoala (Ambodiforaha) (B/L/D)


After breakfast, a whole day we hike on sea coast and up and down on the hill. On the halfway we’ll arrive to National Park boundary and we’ll may spot lemurs, chameleons, snakes, frogs and insects…

Picnic lunch on the beach. Afternoon we’ll keep hiking a long way steeply, slippery and across several streams until to Ambodiforaha. Other night in camp Ambodiforaha.


Day 5: Masoala (B/L/D)


After breakfast, a short walk on the beach will take you to the Masoala National Park’s boundary. Day devoted to wildlife watching. The lowland rainforest of the national park is home endemic lemurs such as the red ruffed lemur, white fronted brown lemur and nocturnal lemurs: Masoala woolly or moor’s lemur and Masoala sportive or Scosh lemur, brown mouse lemurand90 species of birds, some of them are endemic as the brown mesite, helmeted vanga, blue vanga, short leg ground roller and scaly ground roller. Free picnic lunch in the camp. The afternoon will be spent at leisure. Night walks should reveal other mammals including Eastern Woolly, and diminutive Brown Mouse Lemurs. The reserve’s hereto fauna is also impressive, with brightly-patterned and bizarre frogs, geckos, and chameleons, including the giant Parson’s Chameleon. Overnight and dinner at the camp.

Day 6: Masoala (Ambodiforaha) – Sahalegno (B/L/D)

Breakfast depart along the way stile in the National Park, we connect coastal forest and Madagascar’s most bizarre, wonderful, and other-worldly landscape, an endlessly intricate maze of jagged eroded limestone. Our main aim in visiting this park is simply to experience the Tsingy, though this being Madagascar, there is plenty of biological diversity to go along with the geological wonders. Possible to see the immigrate birds including Madagascar pratincole, Madagascar starling, broad-billed roller and several terns’ s colony such as brown noddy, lesser creasted tern, roseate tern… Picnic lunch on the beach. Dinner and night camping on the beach Sahalegno.


Day 7: Sahalegno – Ratragnavona (B/L/D)


This will be a long day of hiking the central mountains of beautiful lowland rainforest in Masoala and we across the boundary to split Analanjirofo and SAVAregions. We may see the frog among the Green backed mantellas, Hognose snake, Picnic lunch in the forest Arrival installation the camp. Dinner and night on camp.


Day 8: Ratagnavona – Fampotabe (B/L/D)


We spend a full day for hiking along coastal forest and beautiful beach. Picnic lunch based sea food on the beach. Arrival and installation the camp in the village.


Day 9: Fampotabe – Antsôpatsôpa (B/L/D)


We’ll spend full morning to hike on the deciduous forest, lunch on the way and afternoon we’ll connect on the costal forest eastern coast of masoala peninsula. Arrival and installation the camp. Dinner and other night on the camp.


Day 10: Antsôpatsôpa – Sahamalaza or Anaovandrano (B/L/D)


Breakfast and departure, start from here the way is good for walking but severaltraverse the river by pirogue fairy. Picnic lunch on the road. Arrival and installation the camping. Dinner and other night on the camp

Day 11: Sahamalaza – Ampanavoana (B/L/D)

We follow the way and passage to detached reserve is the home orchid like bulibofilum, … this coastal rainforest . Picnic lunch on the road. Arrival and installation the camping. Dinner and other night on the camp


Day 12: Ampanavoana – Fampôtakely (B/L/D)


We continue on to the way, crossing the Ampanavoana River, where roadside markets display a variety of local fruit, and fish, octopus. We sometimes see Madagascar white throated rail en route along the mangrove and riverside. Picnic lunch on the road. Arrival and installation the camping. Dinner and other night on the camp.


Day 13: Fampôtakely – Ratsianarana (B/L/D)


We continuous our trip the endless Madagascar’s most bizarre, wonderful, and other-worldly landscape, an endlessly intricate maze of jagged eroded limestone. Our main aim in visiting this peninsula is simply, though this being Madagascar, there is plenty of biological diversity to go along with the geological wonders. Picnic lunch on the road. Arrival and installation the camping. Dinner and other night on the camp.


Day 14: Ratsianarana – Ambodirafia (B/L/D)


After breakfast departure, if we leave Ratsianarana, we cross a beautiful river near the mouth river often enjoying the tern’s colony. Picnic lunch on the road. Arrival and installation the camping. Dinner and other night on the camp.


Day 15: Ambodirafia – Ambohitralanana – Antalaha (B/L/D)


Short walk 3h to visit the detached reserve Ambodirafia the home of endemic plant such as the Pitcher plant (nepenthes masoalensis) this reserve is the last natural habitat of this plant. The reserve is a deciduous forest, semi evergreen forest and degraded grassland. We leave early to Ambohitralanana to catch the car (taxi-brousse) and drive to Antalaha.


Day 16: Antalaha – Sambava – Tananarive (B)


Transfer from Antalaha to airport Sambavaand flight back to Tana This is the end of our trip.

Transfer on arrival and departure to the airport, inland navigation (boat transfer from Maroantsetra town to Andranofotsy village, pirogue ferry), the terrestrial transport suitable in this itinerary (from Ambodirafia or Ambohitralanana to Sambava), all entrance on National Park and Reserve, local guide’s fee, fee for porter, cooker and divers, hotel staff, camping accommodation from beginning to the end, meals mentioned in this tour.

Optional tips for guide, porters, snacks, drinks and alcoholic beverages , the flight, travel assurance, excursion not mentioned in this tour but possible will be negotiate to arrange, all extras in the hotels such as mini bar, telephone calls, room service, laundry service, medical fee, other item and service not indicated as being included. Delays and cancellations of flight will not be covered by Masoala Safaris.
